For Tyler Hansen, it was a transformative transforming experience, but one he hopes won't be a one-time only experience. Stepping onto a football field this past weekend as an NFL player was so exciting the former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback almost was overcome when he took part in a Cincinnati Bengals rookie minicamp. "It was like a shock. It was 'wow, I'm in the NFL. It was surreal," said Hansen, who signed as a free agent with the Bengals, along with former Buffs running back and teammate Rodney Stewart. "It was something I dreamed about all the time as a kid, and suddenly it was here. You walk in and you see the logo and then you get dressed. My wristbands say NFL on them, my helmet says NFL on it. The first practice we had on Friday, I was geeked up. I was so hyperactive, that I really needed to calm down." How did Hansen look? Not bad at all, judging by the accounts of Bengals' offensive coordinator, Jay Gruden. "He throws the deep-ball extremely well," Gruden told the Bengals' website. "He reads his progressions. He's made some outstanding throws and he can move in the pocket. He's very accurate." Although he went undrafted, Hansen drew the interest of several NFL teams as a free agent. He nearly signed with the Oakland Raiders after the draft, but was persuaded to sign with the Bengals after a phone call from head coach Marvin Lewis. While Andy Dalton seems assured of the Bengals' starting quarterback job after leading them to the playoffs last season, they are entertaining competitors for the backup and third-string spots. Former Carolina Panthers quarterback Tony Pike is trying to work his way back from elbow surgery to be the backup, but with his uncertain status and no front-runner for the third spot, Hansen could be on the right team to get a job. "I think I did everything that was asked of me over the weekend and thought it went really well," said Hansen, CU's fourth all-time leading passer with 5,705 yards. "I wouldn't say the speed is any different, because I played in a fast conference, in the Pac-12 and the Big 12 with CU. But you have to make quicker decisions. I think I'm in a good spot right now." Hansen said he never got down after going undrafted, despite expectations he might go in the sixth or seventh round. "It didn't go as planned, but being a free agent, I actually got to choose between teams. It might have been a blessing in disguise," Hansen said. "I think I have a very good chance at making this football team, if I just work and do everything I need to do." Stewart, CU's second all-time leading rusher with 3,598 yards, is considered more of a long-shot to make the Bengals. At 5-foot-6, 175 pounds as a senior, Stewart needs to add some bulk to make it at the NFL level. "It was nice to have a guy like Rodney to share this experience with," Hansen said. "We both owe a lot to the University of Colorado, and our coaches there. It'll always be a special place."

CINCINNATI (AP) - The Cincinnati Bengals are asking a federal judge to enforce an order that requires dozens of former players to move their workers comp claims from California to Ohio. At issue is a lawsuit that says players' contracts require workers compensation to be pursued only in Ohio. The Bengals also say Ohio law allows employers and employees to resolve workers comp claims exclusively in Ohio. Unlike most states, California allows insurance payments to workers who can show they suffered trauma that compounded over a period of time. The Bengals' complaint filed Friday asks U.S. District Court Judge Susan Dlott (duh-LAHT') to enforce a May 4 mediator's opinion siding with the Bengals in their dispute with 36 players named in the complaint.
CINCINNATI -- Quarterback Tony Pike had his name affixed above the wooden locker that once belonged to Cincinnati Bengals receiver Jerome Simpson. It was a temporary nameplate, but that was fine by Pike, who is getting a chance to revive his career -- and have a memorable weekend -- with his hometown team. The former University of Cincinnati star was invited to rookie minicamp this weekend to show how far his throwing elbow has recovered from two operations to fix a nerve problem. There's a chance they could sign him to a deal if they think he's healthy and see potential. Even if it's only for the weekend, Pike is enjoying each practice in the stadium where he watched the Bengals play as a fan. "It was a lifelong dream all rolled up in an about hour and a half out there," he said Saturday. "With me growing up in the city and supporting the team, wanting to be part of it, it was pretty special." Given how his career has gone, Pike is relishing every chance to throw a pass with someone watching. He grew up in a suburb and regularly attended UC games when the Bearcats were trying to make their football program relevant. He stayed at home for college and led the Bearcats to their greatest moments, back-to-back Big East titles under Brian Kelly and berths in the Orange and Sugar Bowls. Pike did it despite breaking his left forearm twice -- once as a junior, and again as a senior. His history of injuries weighed against him in the NFL draft. Teams liked his ability to see over the line at 6-foot-5, but were wary of his thin build and his non-throwing forearm, which has a plate for protection. Carolina picked him in the sixth round in 2010 and gave him a deal that included a signing bonus of $81,145. He got into one game as a rookie. A sore throwing elbow forced him to miss most of training camp the next year, and he wound up needing surgery to fix a nerve in the elbow. It was a risky operation for a quarterback. When the first operation didn't help much, he had another involving a slightly different procedure. That seems to have taken care of the problem. "I feel a lot better," Pike said. "After the first surgery, I knew something wasn't taking right. I had it redone. As of now, my strength is pretty much all built up. My accuracy is fine. "Occasionally, I'll get a little numbness, but it comes and goes real quick. I'm told that's just the nerve healing. Another week or two of throwing at this pace and I should be 100 percent." Pike is getting five practices this weekend to convince the Bengals he's worth signing to a deal and taking to training camp. They're set with Andy Dalton as the starter and Bruce Gradkowski as the backup, so Pike would be looking at the No. 3 spot. He knows he won't get any favor for being a hometown player. "In a camp like this, I come in with the mind-set that I have to prove myself," Pike said. "Obviously, what you did in college is what you did in college. I've had a year off from football, and it's just about getting back out there. Unfortunately, it's only 2 1/2 days to bring it all back together." The Bengals brought him to camp with an open mind. "He's been cleared and recovered," coach Marvin Lewis said. "He's trying to give it a go and see what he can do." Pike was rusty at the start of camp, but that was expected. He'd been getting his arm back in shape by throwing to high school receivers. Plus, he didn't get the playbook until the night before camp opened. He didn't have his usual velocity on some passes, a sign his arm isn't all the way back. His goal was to convince the coaches he's healthy enough to earn another look. "That's my mind-set going in, to leave everything out there and come (today) see what happens," he said.

CINCINNATI -- Vontaze Burfict swooped in from his middle linebacker spot and closed on the ball carrier, then quickly pulled up to avoid any contact. He was practicing the thing he needs to improve upon most. ATL: Marvin Lewis' pet project No cheap shots. No late hits. No losing control. The linebacker from Arizona State wasn't selected in the NFL draft last month, in large part because of the way he plays. He repeatedly was penalized for personal fouls in college, despite his coaches' insistence that he change. He also did poorly at the NFL Scouting Combine drills, marking himself a huge risk. One cheap shot, and he could be gone. And he knows it. "Yeah, that's what I practiced on today," Burfict said Friday, after the first workout of the Bengals' rookie minicamp. "We didn't have any pads on. You've got to be disciplined today. You have chances to hit somebody, but you let up. It just comes with practice." The Bengals are known for taking chances on players with trouble in their college careers. They took Chris Henry in the third round in 2005, despite his troubles at West Virginia. In recent years, they've slightly changed their approach, signing troubled players to low-risk deals. Burfict fits the pattern. He was the Pac-10 defensive freshman of the year, starting nine games at middle linebacker. He quickly amassed a history of personal fouls -- more than a dozen in his career, including a 2010 game in which he head-butted Oregon State's Ryan Katz after the quarterback got up from a tackle and headed back to the huddle. Last season, Burfict led the Sun Devils in sacks but was benched in the second half of a game after getting two personal fouls. Burfict's poor performance at the combine sealed his reputation. He wrote NFL teams a letter giving his side of the situation, and Bengals coach Marvin Lewis showed an interest. Lewis called him after the seventh round of the draft was completed and Burfict was still available. "Not being picked, going undrafted -- I have a big chip on my shoulder," Burfict said. "And I'm ready to hit somebody." Copyright 2012 by The Associated Press

The Cincinnati Bengals signed second-round draft pick Devon Still, the team said Friday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed. The former Penn State defensive tackle was slated to be a first-round pick and was one of 26 prospects invited by the NFL to attend the draft. Still, the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 2011, was rated as the 27th-best prospect according to NFL.com personnel guru Gil Brandt. The team also signed fifth-round pick Marvin Jones, a wide receiver out of California. The Bengals have signed four of their 10 draft picks. Cornerback Shaun Prater (Iowa) and safety George Iloka (Boise State) had previously signed. Cincinnati has yet to sign first-round picks Dre Kirkpatrick (Alabama) and Kevin Zeitler (Wisconsin). The team's rookie minicamp started on Friday.

The Cincinnati Bengals enjoyed the most successful free agency period of any team in the division. The Bengals were applauded by many experts for being among the big winners in the NFL draft. The question everyone in Who Dey Nation wants answered is how much ground have the Bengals made up on the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers. But that's the wrong question to be asking. Whether or not the Bengals return to the playoffs isn't about their division rivals. It's about whether this franchise can finally handle success. The Bengals haven't put together back-to-back winning seasons since 1981-82. To put that into perspective, those were the years when Ronald Reagan was beginning his first term as president, a gallon of gas was going for $1.30 and Marvin Lewis was starting his coaching career at Idaho State. This doesn't mean Cincinnati has struggled every year. The Bengals have been to the playoffs three times since 2005, the same amount as the Cowboys and one fewer than the Packers over that span. The problem has been following up that success. An AFC North title in 2005, and an 8-8 season in 2006. Another division title in 2009, and a 4-12 season in 2010. There are few connections to this year's Bengals team and the 2010 one. Only seven players remain starters from Team Ochocinco & T.O., and Andy Dalton, BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Thomas Howard had nothing to do with that disaster of a reality show from two years ago. A.J. Green is still A.J. Green ... and not A.J. Verde. Momentum has clearly been on the Bengals' side since they drafted Dalton and Green last year. Cincinnati went from the NFL's worst team at the start of the 2011 season --according to the ESPN power rankings -- to a playoff one. With the second-most salary cap room in the NFL, the Bengals then used free agency to not only fill holes but upgrade those positions. It was a methodical approach that avoided the pricey big names like Carl Nicks, Robert Meachem and Cortland Finnegan. The theme was solid moves instead of splashy ones. They signed Green-Ellis, an all-around running back and touchdown machine, to replace Cedric Benson. They added left guard Travelle Wharton, a strong run blocker, to take over for Nate Livings. That should boost a team that ranked 30th in the NFL in yards per rush (3.3) and tied for 21st in touchdown runs (three). Cincinnati didn't ignore the defense, signing six former first-round picks. The Bengals kept their free-agent priority, safety Reggie Nelson, beating out the New York Jets for him. Cincinnati then added three cornerbacks (Jason Allen, Adam Jones and Terence Newman) and two defensive linemen (Jamaal Anderson and Derrick Harvey). In the draft, the Bengals landed the best zone cornerback (Dre Kirkpatrick), top run-blocking guard (Kevin Zeitler), the 2011 Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year (Devon Still), a top-rated tight end (Orson Charles) and two promising wide receivers (Mohamed Sanu and Marvin Jones). "You don’t win games on paper and that's what we have to realize, starting with me," Bengals offensive tackle Andrew Whitworth told the team's website. "We've got to be better. This looks like a good class. But the rookies know it's going to come down to what they do and how they prepare and how they go after it." This team is clearly better than last year's one. The expectations, though, are higher. The pressure will be on to finish better than last year's record of 9-7. The pressure will be on to win the division. The Ravens lost the NFL Defensive Player of the Year for the start of the season (Terrell Suggs) and likely won't have their running back in training camp (Ray Rice isn't expected to sign his franchise tag anytime soon). The Steelers could be without their starting running back (Rashard Mendenhall) and nose tackle (Casey Hampton) for the first six weeks of the season and lost long-time leaders (Hines Ward, James Farrior and Aaron Smith) in their salary-cap purge. While the Bengals have question marks at the No. 2 wide receiver spot and strong safety, the gap is significantly smaller between the traditional AFC North powers and Cincinnati this year. The Bengals return a Pro Bowl quarterback and wide receiver in Dalton and Green. They bring back a defense that ranked seventh in yards allowed (316.3) and nine in points given up (20.2). This team isn't lacking in talent or chemistry in the locker room, just a proven track record. The biggest challenge for these young Bengals is beating the best. Cincinnati went 9-0 against non-playoff teams and 0-7 against teams who made the postseason. Maybe that's why the Bengals are ranked No. 16 in the post-draft ESPN power rankings, which is eight spots lower than what they finished last season. There's going to be doubters, especially for a franchise that has gone three decades without consecutive winning seasons. But, based on what they accomplished in free agency and the draft, these are the new and much improved Bengals. All they have to do is show they can handle the best teams in the NFL along with their own success.

Cincinnati Bengals guard Jacob Bell has retired, Yahoo! Sports reported Tuesday. Debate: Kurt Warner's remarks Kurt Warner created quite a stir by saying he would rather his sons not play football. Our analysts give their thoughts. More ... A knowledgeable source confirmed to ProFootballTalk.com that Bell is leaving the game. The source told the website that Bell, who's 31, no longer has the desire to play football. Bell later told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that he decided to retire because he feared for his long-term health in the wake of so many stories about the effects of concussions and other injuries, including the recent suicide of Junior Seau. Bell signed with the Bengals just last month after playing four seasons each with the St. Louis Rams and Tennessee Titans. Bell was a fifth-round selection by the Titans out of Miami of Ohio in the 2004 NFL Draft. He started 100 of the 109 NFL games in which he appeared. The Bengals took guard Kevin Zeitler from Wisconsin last month with the 27th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. They also claimed guard Chris Riley off waivers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Tuesday.

Over the past several years the Pittsburgh Steelers' biggest rival in the AFC North has been the Baltimore Ravens. The season usually ends with one of them winning the division and the other finishing second. After scoring possibly the best draft of the 2012 NFL Draft Cincinnati Bengals fans are making themselves heard. The Bengals just won the division in 2009, they found the quarterback and wide receiver of the future in the 2011 NFL Draft and now have added to that with this year's draft picks. Why can't the Bengals be the team that wins the AFC North in 2012? The first argument made by Bengals' fans is despite the Steelers and Ravens' superiority complex the three teams have each won one division title each in the last three years. The Ravens won in 2011, the Steelers won in 2010 and the Bengals won in 2009. That 2009 team was one of the biggest surprises of the NFL and the Bengals went 6-0 in their division including beating the Ravens and Steelers two times each. That season is pretty irrelevant to today's team because of how much turnover there has been in such a brief time. That 2009 team was led by Carson Palmer and Chad Johnson. We don't look at either the same way as we once did because of how much they've fallen off in such a short period of time. Andy Dalton and AJ Green could be a better combo someday but right now they aren't as good as Palmer/Johnson in their prime. The Bengals also no longer have Cedric Benson who has quietly rushed for over 1,000 yards for three consecutive seasons. Instead they have the very overrated BenJarvus Green-Ellis who benefited from the New England Patriots' high-scoring offense. The Bengals have definitely created a stockpile of young talent. It started last year with Green and Dalton but let's not forget that Dalton didn't play as well in the second half of the season when the schedule got much more difficult. This year's crop of rookies looks very good but what can you expect from first-year players? Not a whole lot. Green went against that theory but nobody the Bengals drafted this year is as good as Green. The Bengals are going to be very young and I don't think you can expect that much from the young players that soon. Look at the other successful teams in the league. The Super Bowl participants-the New York Giants and the Patriots-are loaded with older players. The Ravens, Saints, Steelers, 49ers and Packers all have players with experience. The only other really young team in the playoffs last year was a Detroit Lions team that didn't look like they belonged with the big boys yet either. Bengals' fans will point out that the Bengals were a 9-7 team last year, they made the playoffs and the additions in the NFL Draft should improve their team. What they aren't considering is that they were fortunate to have a 9-7 record because they only had a victory over one winning team last year, the Tennessee Titans. The upcoming season the Bengals will once again have to play the Ravens and Steelers four times and they'll have to play the AFC West and the NFC East. The New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles will probably be losses, the Cowboys are never easy to predict and Robert Griffin III on the Redskins will be a never-know-what-could-happen game like Cam Newton last year. Nobody in the AFC West is necessarily scary but all four could be 8-8 teams which isn't much worse than the Bengals. At the beginning of the season the Ravens claimed that the Steelers' defense was old. This was coming from a Ravens' defense that has 36-year old Ray Lewis, 33-year old Ed Reed and 29-year old Terrell Suggs. The truth is both teams are aging and the Steelers will have salary cap problems after the 2012 season. The Bengals will not beat the Ravens and Steelers in 2012 but after that all bets are off.
CINCINNATI -- The Bengals love those first-round cornerbacks. Cincinnati added to its already bursting collection of top cornerbacks Thursday by taking Alabama's Dre Kirkpatrick with the 17th overall pick. This one will have a little time to work his way into the starting lineup. He'll have to leapfrog a bunch of other first rounders to get there. It marked the third time in the past seven years that Cincinnati chose a cornerback with its top pick. The Bengals also took first rounders Johnathan Joseph in 2006 and Leon Hall in '07, giving themselves one of the league's best tandems. Joseph left for Houston as a free agent after the 2010 season, and Hall tore an Achilles tendon in 2011. It was time to draft another one. The pick came courtesy of the Oakland Raiders, who gave up the 17th overall pick as part of the deal for quarterback Carson Palmer. So far, the deal has worked out much better for the Bengals; Oakland failed to make the playoffs, and Cincinnati was able to replenish its pass coverage. "He played a lot of bump-and-run, a lot of intricate schemes at Alabama," coach Marvin Lewis said. "So, we really feel good about him." The Bengals also had their own pick at No. 21. They traded it to New England and moved down to the 27th spot, where they got versatile guard Kevin Zeitler from Wisconsin. Cincinnati also received the Patriots' third-round pick to move down. They needed an offensive lineman after Nate Livings, their starting left guard each of the past two seasons, went to Dallas as a free agent. Right guard Bobbie Williams broke his right ankle in December and is an unrestricted free agent. They also lack a backup center. Zeitler played the position when he got to Wisconsin and could fill the role. "We were hoping to cover a couple of needs for the future in the first round, and we feel we were able to do that," Lewis said. At both spots, they have a bunch of 30-something players who can break in the new guys. Kirkpatrick joins Hall and other first-round cornerbacks Nate Clements (Buffalo, 2001), Adam Jones (Tennessee, 2005), Terence Newman (Dallas, 2003) and Jason Allen (Miami, 2006). How it fits together is unclear. "You know what?" defensive backs coach Mark Carrier said. "It all remains to be seen." The Bengals think Kirkpatrick eventually can move into a starting role opposite Hall, who is expected to be ready to play this coming season. They're trying to get better pass coverage to help a defensive line that showed it can pressure the passer. "We've got a good rush group," Carrier said. "We want to give the guys up-front more time to get to the quarterback." Kirkpatrick was nicknamed "Swagga" for the confidence he showed as a young baseball player in Alabama. He liked it, and it stuck with him through college. "The fans gave it to me," he said. "I mentioned it in a previous interview, and they ran with it. It was something that the fans and I had going on." Zeitler impressed offensive line coach Paul Alexander with his consistent play, rarely making a mistake. "He's a very, very efficient blocker," Alexander said. "You don't realize he's in there because you don't see a lot of error." The Bengals hadn't picked a guard in either of the first two rounds since they chose Eric Steinbach in the second round in 2003. They signed free agent guards Travelle Wharton from Carolina and Jacob Bell from St. Louis as stopgap measures. When Alexander worked out Zeitler, he quickly became fond of his personality. "If you went fishing and you're sitting on the lake all day, some guys after a half-hour you want to throw them in the water," Alexander said. "This guy, you could sit out there with him all day. "He's a wonderful guy. He's as good a guy as there is, and a good player. When you get a guy like that, it helps your whole team, not only his spot." Zeitler didn't get much chance to fish while in college. He knew the Bengals were interested after Alexander worked him out and passed along praise to his agent. He's going to a team that's unfamiliar. "I know they got to the playoffs last year," Zeitler said. "I know they have Andy Dalton at quarterback and A.J. Green at receiver, and they were effective last year. That's really all I know. I have a lot to learn." The Bengals still need to get help at receiver. Jerome Simpson and Andre Caldwell -- the second and third receiversin 2011 -- left as free agents and haven't been replaced. The extra pick in the second round could help with that position.

CINCINNATI - Former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Jerome Simpson will be suspended for three games after being sentenced for drug-related charges in April, according to an ESPN report Tuesday morning . ESPN's NFL insider, Adam Schefter tweeted Tuesday morning that an NFL source said Simpson will face the three-game suspension to begin the 2012 season. Simpson was sentenced to 15 days in jail after two and a half pounds of marijuana was shipped to his Northern Kentucky home from California in September of last year. In addition to the 15 days in jail, a plea deal includes Simpson paying $7,500 in court fees and completing more than 200 hours of community service. In spite of the three-game suspension, Simpson has visited the Minnesota Vikings and the St. Louis Rams, according to ESPN. The Bengals are also reportedly in the running for Simpson's services. Head coach Marvin Lewis said last month that the team may still re-sign the receiver they took in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft. The Bengals still need to add a number two receiver opposite of A.J. Green. Simpson could fit that role, but even if he returns to Cincinnati the Bengals will still likely use one of their earlier picks in this week's draft on a wide receiver. Even though Simpson has not put up the big numbers many thought he would when he came out of Coastal Carolina, he had his best season in 2011, catching 50 passes for 725 yards and four touchdowns.
The Bengals will play three prime time games, two of them on the road in 2012, a reward for their unexpected playoff appearance last season. Cincinnati opens and closes the regular season against the Ravens. The Bengals open in Baltimore on Monday night, Sept. 10, and finish the regular season at Paul Brown Stadium on Dec. 30 against the Ravens. The Bengals also have prime time games on Sunday, Oct. 21 against Pittsburgh at home and on Thursday, Dec. 13 at Philadelphia. It's the most prime time games they've had since 2007, when they had four. The NFL is giving every team at least one prime time game this season. Their final two games are at Pittsburgh and home against Baltimore, their two top AFC North rivals. Watch ONN and refresh ONNtv.com for the latest information. ©2012 by The Associated Press.
