Bengals training camp leaving Georgetown

The Cincinnati Bengals appear to be close to moving away from central Kentucky.

In an interview with Bengals.com and the Cincinnati Enquirer, Bengals owner Mike Brown said the team is looking to move preseason training camp to Paul Brown Stadium next season and has reached an agreement with the University of Cincinnati to use their facilities on bad weather days.

Since 1997, the Cincinnati Bengals have come to Georgetown College for training camp, but word from the team president sounds like that tradition is likely coming to an end.

Brown admitted the new collective bargaining agreement that limits practices, and the possibility of an 18-game schedule, are the main reasons for the possible move.

For those in Georgetown who look forward to an influx of people when the Bengals are in town, like the owner of Fava’s Restaurant on Main Street, the news is upsetting.

“I can remember when they first started coming, and the first couple of years weren’t great. But as people heard about the camp being here, more people came from out of town, brought their kids, went out there and watched them practice and got autographs. The kids enjoyed it, so I think there’s going to be a lot of people disappointed,” says Jeni Gruchow.

Georgetown College officials tell NEWSFIRST they want to keep the Bengal’s training camp at their facilities, and iterate that nothing is final just yet.

If the Bengals decide to stay in Cincinnati it will be the first time the team has held training camp at home in 43 years.

That’s all for today guys, i’ll be back to blog you tomorrow.

Bengals release Carson’s brother, QB Jordan Palmer

CINCINNATI — The Cincinnati Bengals have waived quarterback Jordan Palmer, who came to training camp hoping to compete for a job but didn’t get much of a chance.

Palmer was the backup quarterback last season to brother Carson Palmer, who has decided to retire rather than play another season for the Bengals. Jordan Palmer led workouts with Cincinnati’s offense during the NFL lockout and tutored rookie quarterback Andy Dalton.

The Bengals decided to make Dalton the starter and signed veteran Bruce Gradkowski, an indication they didn’t plan to keep Palmer. Dalton and Gradkowski ran most of the plays during training camp practices and preseason games.

That’s all the news for today.

Rookie QB Dalton to start Bengals preseason opener

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — Rookie quarterback Andy Dalton will start the Cincinnati Bengals’ preseason opener on Friday night in Detroit.

Coach Marvin Lewis said on Tuesday that his starters will play a little longer than normal for a preseason opener as they try to make up for lost time from the NFL lockout.

The Bengals took Dalton in the second round after Carson Palmer told the team he wouldn’t be back. They’ve been getting Dalton ready to start since the beginning of training camp, giving him by far the most plays in practice of their four quarterbacks.

Lewis says Dalton has shown “exceptional” poise so far.

What are your opinions.

Live from Bengals camp

GEORGETOWN, Ky. — The AFC North blog continues its 2011 training camp tour with the Cincinnati Bengals.

There are plenty of interesting storylines to keep an eye on. For starters, the team is beginning a new era led by rookie quarterback Andy Dalton and No. 4 overall pick A.J. Green. Both will be important cogs in Cincinnati’s new West Coast offense.

I also will be watching the new linebacker corps. Rey Maualuga moves to the middle, which is where he played in college. The Bengals also signed Manny Lawson and Thomas Howard to play the outside linebacker spots.

The Bengals also released their first depth chart Monday. But there will be plenty of competition over the next several weeks that could alter this list.

Be sure to follow the AFC North blog and AFC North Twitter page this week for all the latest observations from Bengals camp.

Bengals Appear Ready To Start Dalton

POSTED: 1:58 pm EDT August 8, 2011
UPDATED: 2:04 pm EDT August 8, 2011

CINCINNATI — Second-round pick Andy Dalton is looking like the starting quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals have yet to play an exhibition game, but Dalton is receiving starter’s reps in training camp and took the majority of the first-team snaps in a scrimmage, according to the team’s website. The Bengals used their first-round pick on wide receiver A.J. Green and traded veteran wideout Chad Ochocinco to New England. They nabbed Dalton with their second-round pick, the 35th overall selection.

With Carson Palmer all but retired, the Bengals are moving on without their starter of the last seven years. They signed former Oakland Raiders starter Bruce Gradkowski, but he has been working as the backup. There are questions about the arm strength of Dalton, a four-year starter at TCU who threw for more than 10,000 yards, 71 TDs and 30 interceptions in college. The Bengals visit Detroit on Friday.
