Bengals relish breakthrough win, wait for word on…

CINCINNATI – A quick-snap touchdown has the long-suffering Cincinnati Bengals thinking that their karma has finally changed.

The Bengals caught the Browns in a brain-lock moment Sunday, allowing A.J. Green’s 41-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter of a 27-17 win. It’s the kind of breakdown that’s been more typical of the Bengals during their 20 years of futility.

A change, perhaps?

“That’s something we didn’t do last year,” defensive tackle Domata Peko said. “Last year in the fourth quarter, we fell apart.”

The Bengals (1-0) won only four games last season, repeatedly blowing chances at the end with mind-boggling moments. One of the worst came when the Saints induced them into an offside penalty by pretending they were going to snap the ball — a gambit the Saints call “No-Brainer Freeze.”

This time, the Browns (0-1) had the brain freeze, failing to leave the huddle while the Bengals lined up and snapped the ball for a go-ahead touchdown. And the Bengals had a rare, happy beginning.

Even coach Marvin Lewis, who usually is reluctant to read anything into one win, recognized the importance of winning the opener the way they did — with a backup quarterback throwing to a rookie receiver while the Browns hesitated.

“It was a great lesson for them to learn and to see something they can believe in and really hang their hat on,” Lewis said on Monday.

The most positive sign was how rookie quarterback Andy Dalton handled his debut on the road. The second-round draft pick completed 10-of-15 passes for 81 yards with a touchdown and no interceptions, leading Cincinnati to 13 points before getting hurt.

Dalton took a helmet to his lower right forearm near the end of the first half and didn’t return because he had trouble gripping the ball. Bruce Gradkowski finished the game.

Dalton was scheduled to see a specialist on Monday. The Bengals are hopeful that he can start next Sunday in Denver, where Cincinnati hasn’t won since 1975, dropping eight in a row. Dalton declined to talk to the media on Monday.

Left tackle Andrew Whitworth had a protective boot on his left foot following the game in Cleveland, but walked without it a day later. Lewis declined to provide updates on players’ conditions, except to say everyone was better on Monday.

Heading into the season, there was speculation that the Bengals could be one of the NFL’s worst teams because it’s starting a rookie quarterback and a rookie receiver. The victory in Cleveland showed they’re not even the worst team in their own state.

Second-year defensive end Carlos Dunlap understands why fans are still reluctant to give them much credit.

“Maybe because we’re young and they don’t feel we have that experience,” Dunlap said on Monday. “I’d say we have experience together.”

Asked about the low expectations for his team, Lewis strayed from his normal practice of keeping answers short and went on for more than 300 words to answer that one question alone.

“I don’t know why we have so many naysayers,” Lewis said.

He noted that Cleveland fans seemed upbeat about their five-win team before the season opener on Sunday, in contrast to fans in Cincinnati. The Bengals have only two winning records in the past 20 years.

“It’s like the opposite,” Lewis said. “I thought we were about to play the ’68 Packers. It’s an unbelievable difference, the attitude and the thing — aura — the way it was there in Cleveland prior to Sunday compared to, for whatever reason, ours is here.

“But we can’t worry about and dwell upon that.”

Not much else going on in the NFL world today.

Cincinnati Bengals will fail to live up to their own preseason NFL predictions of making the playoffs, and the NFL scores the Cincinnati Bengals have been putting up show a team in turmoil. The Cleveland Browns took a hard 13-6 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 14. The last few years have featured a Bills-Browns game in the snow, and this year it was the Bills that took the victory.

Cincinnati Bengals vs. the Cleveland Browns. Both teams were not very good last year to say the least, but one team is making strides while the other is falling apart. While last year’s records weren’t much different, with the Browns finishing at 5-11 and the Bengals finishing at 4-12

Cincinnati Bengals :

Cincinnati Bengals are a professional American football team based in Cincinnati, Ohio. They are members of the AFC’s North Division in the National Football League (NFL).This is going to be Andy Dalton’s first NFL start and luckily he’s going up against a pretty bad defense. Dalton is going to have a nice game so if you were one of those people who waited late in your draft to get a quarterback and ended up with Dalton he’ll be a good start this week.

Cleveland Browns are a professional American football team based in Cleveland, Ohio. They are currently members of the North Division of the American Football Conference (AFC) in the National Football League (NFL). Cleveland doesn’t have a great offense but Cincinnati doesn’t have that great of a defense and I believe that something has to give. Peyton Hillis is going to have his way running the ball which will open up the passing game for Colt McCoy.

‘Pacman’ Jones arrested

Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with two misdemeanors after an incident at a downtown bar.

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) – Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam ”Pacman” Jones was arrested early Sunday morning and charged with two misdemeanors after an incident at a downtown bar.

The embattled NFL player spoke with news media after he was released from jail Sunday and said he hadn’t been drinking before police arrested him and charged him with disorderly conduct while intoxicated and resisting arrest.

WCPO in Cincinnati reported, according to court records, that Jones was escorted out of the bar after refusing to calm down and resisted arrest outside by pulling away as officers tried to place him in handcuffs.

“I was with my wife. It was her birthday. It don’t make sense,” Jones said in video posted on WCPO’s website. “There is no reason why I should have got locked up.”

Jones said he wasn’t yelling profanities inside the bar, as court documents claim, and that he didn’t resist arrest either.

“I’m in a neck brace. How am I resisting arrest?” Jones said. “I just had surgery.”

“I wasn’t yelling at police,” he said. “And at the end of the day, I’m the bad guy.”

Jones, 27, played just five games for the Bengals last season after they signed him to an undisclosed contract. He was placed on injured reserve with a herniated disc in his neck, an injury he suffered October 24 during a game in Atlanta.

Of course, Jones is best-known for his off-the-field legal troubles, including his involvement in a Las Vegas strip club shooting in 2007, and his multiple league suspensions.

He hasn’t played more than nine games since the 2006 season.

Bengals’ Ochocinco to miss second straight game

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco will not make the trip to Baltimore for Sunday’s regular-season finale.

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) – Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco will not make the trip to Baltimore for Sunday’s regular-season finale.

Rather, the 32-year-old is going to remain in Cincinnati to get treatment on his ankle that forced him to miss last week’s 34-20 victory over San Diego.

Ochocinco plans to undergo an arthroscopic procedure in the near future.

In 14 games this season, Ochocinco caught 67 passes for 831 yards and four touchdowns.

Bengals’ Ochocinco, coach exchange verbal shots

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco said he’ll have surgery in the offseason for bone spurs in his left ankle.

“I’m messed up bad right now,” he said yesterday. “My ankle’s killing me.”

Ochocinco missed practice yesterday and said he expects to have a reduced role in the last two regular-season games, including Sunday’s clash against visiting San Diego. The situation has evidently rankled head coach Marvin Lewis, who took a swipe at him during a conference call yesterday.

“Well, he’s being his mopey self,” Lewis said. “Hopefully he can pull himself out of it and move forward. When things don’t go Chad’s way, this is kind of what happens.”

Asked how he deals with it, Lewis said, “I don’t deal with it. We just move on, all right? We’ll put a new guy in there. If he’s not ready to go on Sunday we’ll have somebody in there ready to go, and go from there.”

Ochocinco heard about Lewis’ comments and fired back on Twitter: “This is how they treat you when you hurt, the things you don’t get to see as fans.”

He was just getting started, fuming about his coach’s words again in a subsequent tweet before adding in another post: “Did anyone get the license plate to the bus I was just threw under”?

Their season has been roadkill for quite some time.

The Bengals (3-11) dropped 10 in a row, tying the franchise record for longest losing streak in a season. As things got bad, receiver Terrell Owens – the other half of the receiving duo – began questioning the coaching. Owens tore cartilage in his left knee 2 weeks ago, aggravated it during a slump-busting win over Cleveland on Sunday, and had surgery a day later.

Noteworthy

* Indianapolis receiver Austin Collie suffered a concussion Sunday against Jacksonville, and has been placed on injured reserve.

Collie was injured late in the first half against Jacksonville when linebacker Daryl Smith appeared to hit him in the head with his forearm as Collie went low to make a catch. It was his second concussion of the season.

* The 49ers will start Troy Smith at quarterback against St. Louis on Sunday, according to a report.

The San Francisco Chronicle, citing two sources, reported that Smith will get the nod over Alex Smith, who has started the last two games after missing five games with a separated left shoulder.

* Denver quarterback Kyle Orton said he has been told Tim Tebow will start the next two games, beginning with Sunday’s clash against Houston.

Orton, who said his bruised ribs were almost healed, signed an extension through 2011 last summer but said he’s no longer sure of his role with the team. Tebow got his first start of the season in a loss to Oakland last week.

* A Cleveland spokesperson said rookie quarterback Colt McCoy sat out practice with an “illness” but is expected to return today.

* Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers returned to practice and is expected to start Sunday’s game against the New York Giants. Rodgers, who suffered his second concussion of the season 2 weeks ago in a game against Detroit, said he will wear a new helmet.

* New York Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez was limited in practiced with a sore right shoulder, but insisted he’ll start at Chicago Sunday whether or not he is 100 percent. The Jets (10-4) would clinch a playoff spot with a win over the Bears (10-4).

* San Diego said tight end Antonio Gates likely will sit out the final two games of the regular season to rest his injured right foot in case the Chargers make the playoffs.

Cleveland Browns vs Cincinnati Bengals NFL Football 2010 Live Coverage - Supremacy in the state of Ohio is once again up for grabs. That is, if either of the two teams going to Cincinnati this Sunday really wants it. The host Bengals and visiting Cleveland Browns head into their annual meeting on the state’s southern border in the throes of disarray uncommon even for this recently woebegone rivalry.

Live from Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio, the game matchup between the Cleveland Browns vs Cincinnati Bengals will have a kick off time of 1:00 pm ET, Sunday, December 19, 2010.

Apparently, the Browns stand just 5-8 in the AFC’s blue-collar North division, and though they’ve taken strides as evidenced by wins over New England and New Orleans earlier this season, some of the luster was removed with a desultory 13-6 loss at 3-10 Buffalo last week.

McCoy led the Browns to their most impressive stretch of 2010, consecutive midseason wins over New Orleans and New England. He’ll try to lead the Browns to only their second win in seven games at Paul Brown Stadium. Cleveland lost 16-7 at Cincinnati last season.

On the other hand, unbeaten in the division en route to an AFC North title and home playoff game last season, the Bengals have plunged into the abyss a year later, dropping 10 straight since beginning with two wins in their initial three games.

A 23-20 loss to Cleveland on Oct. 3 started the slide, and it’s since devolved into an average losing margin of more than a touchdown, just one win in six home dates for the year, and the predictable specter of wide receiver Terrell Owens pointing fingers.

Cincinnati has dropped nine more games since then, matching an 0-10 start in 1993 for the longest single-season losing streak in its history.

“Ten straight. That’s it, that’s where this team is right now, 10 straight,” linebacker Brandon Johnson said. “We’ve got a lot of problems. We need a lot of answers.”

Cincinnati head coach Marvin Lewis referenced Owens’ past — and perhaps his future — in responding to Owens’ comments.

“In this case, no one was willing to bring [Owens] aboard for a long time and then we ended up doing it late, so don’t hurt yourself in that situation as you go forward,” Lewis said in reference to the Bengals’ signing of the controversial receiver just before training camp. “There’s a lesson there [to be learned].
