Bengals’ RB Scott watches cousin Gates work out for NFL scouts at ACU pro day

Joey Richards/Reporter-News Former ACU standout and current Cincinnati Bengals running back Bernard Scott, left, takes in ACU’s pro day with his brother Shaylom Richardson on Monday, March 21, 2011.

Cincinnati Bengals running back Bernard Scott watched his cousin Edmund Gates work out at Abilene Christian University’s pro day Monday at the ACU practice field.

Scott, a former ACU player, said he likes Gates’ chances of being taken in this year’s NFL Draft.

“I think his chances are real high,” Scott said. “He’s looking good. He’s come a long way since his first year.”

Just being back at ACU brought back memories for Scott, who played two seasons for the Wildcats — the last in 2008 as Gates’ teammate.

“It brings back a couple of memories,” he said. “I just want to come out here and show my cousin support and talk to some of my old coaches.”

Scott, one of ACU’s all-time great running backs and the Division II football player of the year in ’08, convinced Gates to attend ACU and later walk on to the football team in 2007.

“I always told him that I thought he was going to be a real good receiver once he got out here and put his mind to it,” Scott said. “I think he’s looking real good so far.”

Gates gave Scott credit for getting him out to play football for the Wildcats in ’07, but he said Scott didn’t give him any pointers for Monday’s pro day.

“He helped me get to where I am now,” Gates said. “I’m pretty sure when we get home, he’ll be like, ‘Bro, you should have done this or you should have done that. You did that good.’ I’ll be like, ‘Now you tell me?’”

Scott was a sixth-round pick by the Bengals in 2009. He’s rushed for 620 yards and a touchdown on 135 carries in 26 games, including two starts, in two seasons for the Bengals. He also had 16 catches for 127 yards and handled some kick return duties. He returned a kickoff for a touchdown his rookie season.

It’s uncertain if there will be an NFL season in 2011 because of the NFL lockout. Scott said he doesn’t worry himself over the details of the lockout, but does keep up with what’s going on.

“My agent keeps me up to date on everything,” he said. “I’m just trying to stay focused and continue to work out, try to be ready whenever they open up the doors, be ready to go back to work. I’m just going to let it take care of itself. I feel like it’s out of my hands.”

Not that the lockout hasn’t affected him. He said he would normally spend the offseason working out at the Bengals’ facility in Cincinnati, but can’t because of the lockout. Now, he’s working out with his personal trainers in Dallas.

“I look at it like I’m back in college,” he said. “I can work out on my own. I’m getting good work. I’ve got good trainers. I’ll be all right.”

Gotta run!.

Source: Cincinnati Bengals not expected ro re-sign Terrell Owens

Updated: December 21, 2010, 11:07 AM ET

The Cincinnati Bengals are not expected to re-sign outspoken receiver Terrell Owens, who was placed on injured reserve Tuesday, a league source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

Owens decided to have knee surgery Monday, ending his revival season in Cincinnati. The 37-year-old receiver tore cartilage in his left knee two weeks ago, but kept playing. He aggravated the injury while making a cut on the opening series of the 19-17 win Sunday against Cleveland, forcing him to hobble off the field.

Owens signed a one-year deal with a $2 million base salary at the start of training camp, when the Bengals were one of the few teams interested. He proved he could still play, leading the team with 72 catches for 983 yards and nine touchdowns.

He ranked among the NFL’s top six receivers in yards and catches before the game against Cleveland. He has said that he hopes to play for two or three more years.

Owens flew to Birmingham, Ala., on Monday and was examined by Dr. James Andrews. He tweeted a photo of himself in a hospital gown getting ready for the operation late Monday afternoon.

“BIG THANKS 2 every1 4 their support (and) prayers! I’ll b back on the field …” he tweeted.

Photos of him in a recovery area were posted after the surgery, along with a tweet: “had knee surgery! Will b ok.”

Despite Owens’ big numbers, the Bengals (3-11) are having one of their worst seasons. The victory over Cleveland ended a 10-game losing streak that matched the longest in club history for one season. They finish at home against San Diego (8-6) and at Baltimore (10-4).

As the losing streak went on, Owens became more outspoken, blaming the coaching staff for the offensive struggles. Running back Cedric Benson expressed his opinion earlier in the season, then kept quiet while it all fell apart.
